Yesterday the boys were playing outside and heard a strange noise. “There’s a bird or a cat and it is stuck somewhere!” Gee. now THAT sounds nothing like something I want to be involved in. As cold hearted as it may sound, I’m not a fan of cats and I’m REALLY not a fan of birds. Especially stuck ones.
But partly I wondered what they were even meaning and went outside to humor them- and heard a very intense mew/cry sound near a shed that is on the side of our house. So like the brave person I am, I told the boys not to go on the side of the house, and I went back in the house. Then I called my husband. He thought maybe a cat got stuck inside the shed, chuckled, said “that’s weird,” then asked me to write a note to him to check on it when he got home.
And I totally forgot to write the note. (boy this blog stuff. sheesh. revealing!)
Fast forward to this morning when the boys went outside to play and Nathan heard the sound again. So this time I felt awful and went to Eric to see if he could check it out. I’m SO glad he was home!
He stood on the top of the storage unit and could see a tiny baby kitten stuck between the wall and the shed. And it was mew, mew, mewing away! I could not believe it was still alive!
After a couple quick internet searches (animal control, animal rescue), we did what we do best when something’s the matter. Called Jeff Kershaw.
Armed with leather gloves, a net, two hockey sticks, a box with a towel in it and a lid, and some gatorade, they got to work. After 12 grueling seconds the kitten finally made it out. It was shivering and so small, but looked healthy and was actually very pretty. It had charcoal fur and smoky blue eyes.
Our plan was to take it to an animal shelter, but God had another plan. We offered it some gatorade and placed it in the box. Eric and Jeff chatted on the porch for a few minutes before Jeff left, and a lady walking her dog stopped and asked if we had a cat. Eric said, “No, but we just got a kitten out from behind my shed where it was stuck.”
The lady (Patrice) was so pleased and glad to hear that the kitten was safe. She had walked her dog past our house yesterday and the dog could hear the kitten and was upset- even trying to jump the wall to get to it.
After speaking with her and showing her the cat, she told us that she’d raised a few abandoned kittens and nursed them to health with the help of her dog who treated them as its own. We told her our plans, and that our family is very allergic, and she offered to care for the cat for a couple of months until its old enough to be spayed or neutered and given away.
We exchanged phone numbers, and Nathan shed some tears, and we all said goodbye.
What a sweet yet unusual story of God’s provision over the smallest of creatures. He has a sovereign plan- over when the kitten was rescued and who was walking past. Even to the most minute detail, His plan is perfect and we can rejoice in it.
Matthew 10:29 says, “What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it.”
